Well, it's December, and that means that the Christmas season has officially begun at Berlitz WordMaster!! What are your favorite things to do at this time of the year? Going to parties? Shopping for gifts? Baking Christmas treats? Or how about celebrating the season by going to a Christmas choral concert, maybe even while spending Christmas abroad? Now THAT sounds like a great way to get into the Christmas spirit!

  • The word church can mean:

    - A building used by Christians for religious services (= ceremonies) and other activities.

    - The religious service held inside a church.

    - A particular group of Christians; for example, the group of people who regularly attend services at a particular church building.

    A cathedral is a very large and important church (building), usually made of stone.

    Be Careful! We often don't use “the” before the word church. (See Examples 2-4.)
  • church には、次のような意味があります。

    - キリスト教徒が、礼拝(儀式)や、その他の活動に使う建物。
    - その建物の中で行われる礼拝。
    - キリスト教徒の特定の集団。例えば、特定の教会の建物で行われる礼拝に、定期的に参加する人々。

    cathedral とは、とても大きく、また重要な教会(の建物)のことで、多くの場合、石で造られています。

    注意:church という単語の前には、冠詞の the をつけずに使うことが多くあります。(Exampleの2~4参照)
