2005.12.19(Review of 2000.12.23 edition)
Greetings! This week we give you the essence of the holiday season: four words that describe much of what makes this time of year so special. Enjoy!
CELEBRATE 祝う
- To celebrate a birthday, holiday, promotion, or other event is to do something special and enjoyable because the event is special.
Be Careful! In English we cannot use the pattern “celebrate a PERSON” like the Japanese 「人を祝う」. We celebrate an EVENT. - celebrate a birthday(誕生日)、holiday(祝日)、promotion(昇進)やその他の出来事などというと、特別な日やイベントを祝うという意味になります。
注意:英語では、日本語の「人を祝う」のように celebrate a PERSON という使い方はしません。celebrate an EVENT「出来事を祝う」というように使います。
- Last year we celebrated the Emperor's birthday by visiting the Imperial Palace.
- a: How did your family celebrate Christmas when you were a child?
b: We went to church in the morning and then had a turkey dinner at my grandmother's house early in the afternoon. - a: Guess what? Susan's going to have a baby! I'm going to be a father!
b: That's great! Let's celebrate. I'll buy you a drink.
Bye!
