  • When two people shake hands, they take each other's hand and move it up and down as a greeting.

    A handshake (noun) is this action.

    Be Careful! There are several ways to use the expression shake hands. Look carefully at the examples, and notice when to use “with” and when to use “hand” rather than the plural “hands.”
  • shake hands は、挨拶として、互いの手を取りあって上下に振る、つまり、握手をする、という意味です。

    名詞形は handshake です。

    注意:握手をする、という言い方にはいくつかあります。どういう場合に with を付け、どういう場合に単数形の hand を使うか、よく注意して見てください。



  1. Americans usually shake hands when they meet for the first time.
  2. I shook hands with President Roosevelt when I was a boy. It was one of the greatest moments of my life.
  3. After winning first prize, everyone was congratulating me and shaking my hand.
  4. A firm (= hard, but not TOO hard!) handshake usually makes a better first impression than a limp (= soft and loose) one.
