Explanation

  • When say and tell are followed by a full sentence, the patterns used after each word are a little different:

    say + that + (FULL SENTENCE)

    tell + (PERSON) + that + (FULL SENTENCE)
    Be Careful! You must say WHO is spoken to, immediately after the word tell.
  • saytell は、後に文が続くとき、そのパターンが若干異なります。

    say + that +(主語+動詞)

    tell +(人)+ that +(主語+動詞)
    注意:tell を使い、誰に向かって言うのかを伝えるときは、tell のすぐ後に(人)を付け加えなければなりません。

  1. Hugh called to say that he's going to be late.
  2. (two tourists in Paris getting directions)
    PASSERBY: Il faut tourner a gauche au deuxieme feu.
    TOURIST 1: What did he say?
    TOURIST 2: He said that we should turn left at the second light.
  3. (on the phone)
    a: Can I take a message?
    b: Just tell her that I called.
  4. Tell the salesman that you're a friend of mine. He'll give you a good deal.
