Explanation

  • The books are the written records of money that comes in or goes out of a business or organization.

    Be Careful! Books is always plural when used in this way.
  • books とは、企業や組織において、入ってきたり出て行ったりする金銭に関する書面の記録のことをいいます。

    注意:books はこのような意味で使われるときは、必ず複数形になります。

  1. My uncle is a trained accountant and keeps the books for my restaurant for free.
  2. (a shopkeeper)
    This was the first year since we started business that we've been able to balance the books (= money coming in was more than [or the same as] money going out).
  3. He had been embezzling funds, and cooking the books for years to cover up his crime.
