Explanation

  • To withhold money from an employee's paycheck is to take money out of it for taxes, insurance, etc.

    To dock an employee's pay is to take part of it away, especially because the employee did something wrong.
  • withhold は、税金や保険料などのために、従業員の給料からお金を引く、という意味です。

    dock は、特に従業員が何か悪いことをしたため、その給料の一部を引き去る、という意味です。

examples

  1. (clerk in human resources to new employee)
    This form gives us permission to withhold income and Social Security taxes from your paycheck.
  2. The government there has made it mandatory for companies to withhold money from employee salaries in order to fund retirement accounts.
  3. (supervisor to employee)
    Come in late again and I'll have to dock your pay next time.
  4. I was docked two days' wages for damaging the forklift.
