  • To renovate something (especially a building) is to repair and make improvements to it in order to return it to a previous, better condition.

Renovation is the act of renovating something. Specific repairs, improvements, etc., are called renovations (with an “s”).

Be Careful! We do NOT use the words “reform” (リフォーム) or “renewal” (リニューアル) to mean renovation or renovations.

  1. I'm not surprised you don't have more customers; this restaurant is falling apart. Don't you think it's time to renovate the place?
  2. Renovation of the employee dormitory is expected to cost $2 million.
  3. We're planning to make extensive renovations before leasing the property out, as it's fallen into considerable disrepair. We'll be painting the walls, putting in new carpeting, upgrading the electrical system, and replacing most of the light fixtures.
  4. I just drove by that coffee shop you like so much. Did you know it's closed for renovations?
