(SPREAD A) RUMOR うわさ(を広める)
- A rumor is a piece of information that people tell others without knowing whether it's true.
To spread a rumor is to tell it to others. - rumor とは、本当かどうかを知らずに他人に話す情報、つまり、うわさのことです。
spread a rumor と言うと、うわさを他人に伝える、という意味になります。
- a: Did you hear that we're scheduled for restructuring next year?
b: Oh, that's just a rumor. - I heard a rumor that management is going to ban personal use of office e-mail accounts.
- a: There's a rumor going around (= being spread) that the director is resigning.
b: I don't know how that rumor got started, but it's not true. - Someone's been spreading rumors about Eri and me, so let me set the record straight (= tell you the truth) - we are not getting married.
