Hello!
Today's WordMaster makes it clear that, although some people may live to work, most of us - when we're willing to admit it - work to live.
(MAKE A) LIVING 生計(を立てる)
- A living is a way to make money for the things you need for life.
To make a living is to earn enough money to buy the things you need for life. - living とは、生活に必要なものを買うお金を稼ぐ方法、つまり、生計のことです。
make a living は、生活に必要なものを買うのに十分なお金を稼ぐ、つまり、生計を立てる、という意味です。
- a: What do you do for a living?
b: I'm a copywriter for an advertising firm. - I'll be on disability (= collecting disability insurance) until I finish my job retraining and can start earning my own living again.
- a: She's a nature photographer. I hear she does most of her work in East Africa.
b: Wow, that sounds like a great way to make a living! - When I told my father that I was going to major in art history, the first thing he said was “But how are you going to make a living?”
- He's a lawyer, so I'm sure he makes a good living (= makes a lot of money).
Live well today!
