Explanation

  • Common sense is the ability to make good, practical decisions that require no special knowledge.

    Be Careful! We do NOT use the expression common sense like the Japanese 常識 to mean INFORMATION that most people are expected to have, such as the name of Japan's highest mountain or how to buy a subway ticket.
  • common sense とは、特別な知識を必要としない、正しく分別のある判断を下す能力、つまり、良識、常識のことです。

    注意:日本語の「常識」は、ほとんどの人が知っている、と思われている情報(例:日本で一番高い山の名前、地下鉄の切符の買い方など)という意味で使われることがありますが、 common sense は、この意味では使いません。

  1. Nobody should let a child play with a gun. It's just common sense.
  2. a: I had to sit next to someone on the train this morning who was putting on makeup, eating French fries, and having a loud conversation on her cell phone.
    b: Young people just don't have any common sense these days!
    a: Well, actually, she was probably in her fifties.
  3. Don't count your money with all these people around - it's not safe! Use some common sense!
  4. He's a smart guy and would make a good manager if he just had more common sense.
