  • To grow up is to become an adult.

To say that someone grew up IN (for example) Osaka, means that they lived in Osaka when they were a child.

Be Careful! We usually use the expression grow up only to talk about people or animals. Plants, cities, etc. GROW; they do not grow UP.

  1. a: What do you want to be when you grow up, Johnny?
    b: I want to be a fireman.
  2. Children grow up so fast, don't they? I can't believe my two sons are married and have children of their own already.
  3. I was born in Hawaii, grew up in Japan, and then returned to the U.S. to go to college.
