It's time to take another look into the unpredictable world of the idiom. Here are two, in fact!

IN THE RED / IN THE BLACK   赤字で/黒字で

Explanation

  • To be in the red is to be in debt (= you've spent more money than you had in your bank account, etc.).

    To be in the black means that you are not in debt.

    Be Careful! We can say that either a PERSON or an ACCOUNT is in the red or in the black.
  • in the red とは、借金をしている状態にあることを表します。(銀行口座の残高よりも多くお金を使ってしまった、など)

    in the black とは、借金をしていない状態にあることを表します。

    注意: a PERSON is in the red/black と言うこともできますし、an ACCOUNT is in the red/black と言うこともできます。

  1. After three years in the red, we've finally managed to balance the books.
  2. The state government decided to raise taxes after going into the red for the first time in 50 years.
  3. I plan to stay in business as long as we continue to operate in the black.
