Hello! Many of this week's WordMasters were inspired by mistakes we hear in the classroom - mistakes that occur because students confuse English with Japanese-English. Well, here's another point of confusion we'll help you get straight .... Just think how impressed they'll be when you ask to have your next latte served in one of these!

Today's LessonCATEGORY: ジャパニーズイングリッシュ
MUG   マグカップ

Explanation

  • A mug is a heavy cup with straight sides and a handle, usually used for hot drinks.

Be Careful! “Mug cup” 「マグカップ」 is Japanese-English.
  • mug は、ずっしりと重く、側面がまっすぐで取っ手が付いているカップのことです。普通は熱い飲み物を飲むときに使います。

    注意:mug cup 「マグカップ」は和製英語です。

examples

  1. I'll have a tall latte. And could I have it in a mug rather than a paper cup, please?
  2. Many coffee shops these days sell mugs, tumblers, and even coffee makers.
  3. (to a friend while skiing)
Let's go inside and warm up with a mug of hot cocoa, okay?
