For Life

What do Lincoln, Noguchi Hideyo, the Great Sphinx at Giza, Santa Claus, and Adolf Hitler all have in common? Why, prominent facial hair of course! (After all, what else could Santa and Hitler possibly have in common?)

This week we ponder the whys and wherefores of this most ostensibly male trait. Enjoy!

Today's Lesson
BEARD   あごひげ、ほおひげ

  • A beard is hair that a man grows on his cheeks, chin, or neck.
  • beard とは、男性のほお、あご、首に生える毛、つまり、あごひげやほおひげのことです。

  1. a: Are you growing a beard?
b: No. I just didn't have time to shave this morning.
  2. Why do wizards in movies always have long, white beards?
  3. I think I'm going to shave off this beard. It's starting to itch.
  4. I hardly recognize you without your beard.

英会話レッスンBy the way, the Sphinx really did have a beard. If you're interested, you can see a piece of it at the British Museum in London!
