Greetings!

Over the years, we've introduced dozens of words for the best qualities a human being can aspire to: bright, intelligent, considerate, reliable, polite, and many others. But none of us are perfect, and we think it's important that you're able to speak about some common flaws in human character, as well. Interestingly, when we came up with a useful set of words, we were surprised to find that all five began with the letter “S”!

So, here they are - five words to use when you have a somewhat low estimation (S-timation?) of yourself or others!

Today's Lesson
SELF-CENTERED   自己中心的な

Explanation

  • Someone who is self-centered usually thinks and cares only about him or herself.
  • self-centered とは、たいてい、自分のことしか考えていない、または、自分のことだけを気にする、という意味です。

SELF-CENTERED

examples

  1. a: I was surprised how self-centered Julie's daughter is.
b: She's only 12. I was the same way when I was her age.
  2. (man proposing to girlfriend)
I know that I can be a little self-centered at times, but I'll really try hard to make you happy.
  3. He's so self-centered - he didn't ask me a single question about myself.
  4. (after moving to a new city)
People here seem to be more considerate of others - not as self-centered as people back home.
