SMILE vs. LAUGH 微笑む vs. 笑う
- To smile is to turn up the ends of the mouth and look happy or friendly.
To laugh is to smile AND, at the same time, to make a sound with your voice, showing that you are happy or amused (= you think something is funny). - smile は、口角を上げて、幸せそうな表情や親しみやすい表情をする、つまり、微笑む、という意味です。
laugh は、微笑むと同時に声を出して、嬉しい、あるいは、面白いと思っていることを表す、つまり、笑う、という意味です。
- My daughter is always smiling. She's a very happy kid!
- (friends at a school dance)
She's been smiling at you all evening. You should say hello. - Smile for the camera!
- (talking about a television comedy series)
a: Wasn't last night's episode the best ever?
b: Definitely. It was so funny I couldn't stop laughing. - I like Smitty. He's the only person who laughs at my jokes.
