Explanation

  • A cream puff is a baked pastry with empty space inside that is usually filled with custard sauce or whipped cream.

    Be Careful! The Japanese expression シュークリーム comes from the French expression for cream puff, “chou à la crème”, and will not be understood by most English speakers. In fact, シュークリーム sounds like “shoe cream”, which is used to polish shoes.
  • cream puff は、生地を焼いて内側を空洞にした皮の中に、通常、カスタードクリームや生クリームを詰めたお菓子、つまり、シュークリームのことです。

    注意：「シュークリーム」は、フランス語の chou à la crème（シュー・ア・ラ・クレーム）からきた言葉です。英語圏の国では cream puff のことを、フランス語で何と呼ぶか知っている人は少ないので、「シュークリーム」と言うと、shoe cream、つまり、靴みがき用のクリームと誤解されてしまいます。
