In a throwaway world, it's nice to know that every WordMaster edition is a keeper!
WASTEBASKET vs. TRASH BIN / TRASH CAN
- A wastebasket, trash bin, or (especially when metal) trash can is a container used to hold waste.
Be Careful[1]! The word wastebasket is used especially to talk about containers that are mainly for waste paper and that are kept inside a building. The expressions trash bin and trash can are used especially to talk about containers that are used to hold food and other kitchen waste or are kept outside.
Be Careful[2]! We do NOT use the expression “dustbox” (ダストボックス) to mean wastebasket, trash bin, or trash can.
trash bin 、 trash can
- a: What should I do with this junk mail?
b: You can just throw it in the wastebasket. - Please don't put food in the wastebasket; it'll smell up the office.
- There are three large trash bins in front of the convenience store. One is for burnable trash, another is for non-burnable trash, and the third is for things that can be recycled.
- (a father to his son)
After you empty the trash can in the kitchen, don't forget to put in a new trash bag. - (with a friend in a park)
a: Do you see a trash can anywhere?
b: No, I don't think there are any. I think you're supposed to take trash with you when you leave.
Thanks for taking time out of your busy day to drop by. It meant a lot to us!
