Here's a classic tool - the centerpiece of another classic edition of Berlitz WordMaster!
WRENCH レンチ
- A wrench is a tool that is used to hold and turn nuts and bolts.
Be Careful! In the United States, we do NOT usually use the word “spanner” (スパナ) to mean wrench.
- I don't think I have a wrench big enough to fit this nut.
- (to a child getting too big for his bicycle)
Hand me that wrench. I'll see if I can raise the seat any higher. - (buying a bookshelf)
CUSTOMER: Do I need any special tools to put the bookshelf together?
SALESMAN: No. It comes with everything you need, even a little wrench for tightening the nuts. - Do you have an adjustable wrench in your toolbox?
That should tighten up your English another notch or two!
