For Life
2005.04.18(Review of 2001.02.27 edition)

Hello! It's the middle of April - a fine month in itself - and its much-loved neighbor, May, is less than two weeks away. It's hard to think of a time of year when spirits are higher and the land lovelier.

We think you'll enjoy the theme this week. It's about spending time with friends and those delightful chance encounters when you see a familiar face where you least expect it!

Today's LessonCATEGORY: 間違えやすいボキャブラリー

  • A person who has been your friend for many years is an old friend.

A close friend is a very good friend.

Be careful! An old friend is NOT necessarily old in age, and a close friend does NOT necessarily live close to you.
  • 昔からの友達のことを old friend といいます。

    close friend は、とても親しい友達、つまり親友のことです。

    注意:old friend というのは、歳をとった友人のことではありません。また close friend は、近くに住んでいる友人のことではありません。

  1. Let me introduce you to an old friend of mine. We grew up together.
  2. My oldest friend in the world is getting married next week. We've known each other since kindergarten.
  3. Most of my close friends live in Okinawa, where I grew up. I spend a fortune on long-distance phone calls!
  4. I couldn't live without Tony. He's my one true love and my closest friend.
