For Life
2003.10.14

Welcome back, for another week of Berlitz WordMaster! Yesterday was Health and Sports Day (It's been 39 years since the Tokyo Olympics were opened!), and as the Japan Series baseball championship is about to begin as well, we thought this would be a fine time for another weeklong series on sports. So take a few minutes to warm up, do a few stretches, and let's begin!

Today's LessonCATEGORY: Japanese English
CHEERLEADER   チアリーダー、チアガール

Explanation

  • A cheerleader is a person - usually a girl - who wears a uniform, cheers (= shouts words of support) for a sports team, and encourages the crowd to cheer as well.

    Be careful:
The expression "cheer girl" (チアガール) is Japanese-English and is NOT used to mean cheerleader.
  • cheerleader  は、ユニフォームを着て、スポーツチームに声援を送る応援団員で、たいていは女性です。ほかの観客も一緒に応援するよう、リードする役目もします。

    注意:
cheer girl (チアガール) は、和製英語です。 cheerleader   の意味にはなりません。

examples

  1. My daughter's a cheerleader for her high school football team. She has practice three times a week.
  2. I fell in love with a cheerleader in college. She looked so cute in her ponytail and cheerleader uniform, I had to ask her out.
  3. By the end of the game I think the cheerleaders were even more tired than the players.
