From the time of Edison and Marconi, electricity has brought the voices, music, and sounds of the world into our homes. Here's a recent form these talking and singing machines have taken.
- A boombox is a portable stereo with two speakers and a handle for carrying. It usually includes a radio, plus a CD player, MD player, and/or cassette player.
Be careful:
The expression "radio cassette player", like the Japanese ラジカセ, is sometimes used in English; however, it is very general, used to talk about boomboxes as well as in-home stereo components and smaller devices, like a Sony Walkman.
- Gerry keeps a boombox on his desk at work and listens to light rock all day.
- a: Shall we take the boombox with us camping?
b: Are you kidding! I thought we were going to the country for some peace and quiet. - Boomboxes these days sound so good that a lot of people use them for their in-home stereo.
Take care!
