Today's commonly confused expressions are certainly close in meaning, but be careful - there's also a very important difference!
ALTERNATIVE ENERGY vs. RENEWABLE ENERGY
代替エネルギー vs. 再生可能エネルギー
- Alternative energy is power that is NOT produced by burning fossil fuels (= coal, oil, or natural gas), or a source of such power.
Renewable energy is power that comes from a source that cannot be used up, or the source itself.
Be Careful! Although nuclear power is alternative energy, it is NOT renewable energy because, like oil, the amount of nuclear fuel on the planet is limited. - alternative energy とは、化石燃料（石炭、石油、天然ガス）の燃焼で生じるのではないエネルギー、またはそのエネルギー源のことです。
renewable energy とは、使い尽くすことのないエネルギー源から生じるエネルギー、またはそのエネルギー源のことです。
注意：原子力は alternative energy ですが、地球上の核燃料の量は石油と同じように限られているので、renewable energy ではありません。
- Our local electric company produces 80% of its electricity from alternative energy sources, including hydroelectric, wind, and solar.
- As oil prices get higher, the demand for alternative energy will continue to increase.
- As part of a comprehensive zero waste program, we're gradually switching to renewable energy at all of our manufacturing plants.
