Happy New Year, and welcome to the first edition of WordMaster@Work for the year 2009!

If you're also a reader of WordMaster For Life, then you know that we've been making our first post-holiday edition a sort of “kakizome” (first calligraphy of the New Year) to set the tone for the New Year. Well, this year, @Work takes over that tradition with a whole WEEK of “kakizome.” This is a group of words that we would all do well to aspire to in 2009!

  • Someone is professional if they demonstrate the appropriate behavior, attitude, and skill for a well-trained person in that job.
  • professional とは、ある仕事において適切な行動、態度、技能のある熟練した人、つまり、プロの、という意味です。



  1. His staff was very professional. They were knowledgeable and willing to answer any questions I had.
  2. It's important to look professional for a job interview, so I'd suggest you wear a suit.
  3. a: The new hardwood floor looks great!
    b: Doesn't it? I think the workers did a very professional job.
  4. Watching the clock all the time doesn't show a very professional attitude.
  5. It was very unprofessional (= not professional) of you to argue with Ned in front of the customers.
