Hello again! Well, despite what we said on Tuesday, here's one example of an extremely colorful expression that is also extremely useful!
ON THE TIP OF YOUR TONGUE 喉まで出かかって
- If something (for example, a name) is on the tip of your tongue, you can't remember it at that particular moment, but you feel that you'll remember it very soon.
- 例えば名前などについて on the tip of your tongue と言うと、その時には思い出せないけれども、すぐに思い出せそうな気がする、つまり、喉まで出かかっている、という意味になります。
- What's that actor's name, again? ... Oh, it's on the tip of my tongue!
- a: Do you want a hint?
b: No, it's on the tip of my tongue. Just give me a minute. - The answer was on the tip of my tongue, but it just wouldn't come to me (= I couldn't remember it).
