It's always interesting to learn how idioms originate. Today's apparently comes from the field of aircraft design and testing, where the “envelope” is an airplane's performance limits. It's a sort of outer boundary that test pilots sometimes risk their lives trying to stretch - or “push” - further!

Explanation

  • To push the envelope is to try to do more than is currently possible in a particular field.
  • push the envelope とは、ある特定の分野において、現在可能である以上のことをしようとする、という意味です。
