2006.12.12(Review of 2004.06.24 edition)
There's a great deal of truth in the saying “You never truly appreciate a thing until you lose it.” And remembering that may help you understand the meaning of today's idiom, since money never seems so precious (or “pretty”) as when we have to part with it!
A PRETTY PENNY かなりの金額
- A pretty penny is a lot of money.
- a pretty penny は、多額のお金、という意味です。
- That's a really nice car! It must have cost you a pretty penny.
- (two guests at a foreign executive's luxury apartment)
a: Look at this place! There's more floor space in her living room alone than in my entire apartment!
b: I bet she pays a pretty penny for it too. - (talking about a painting that's about to be auctioned off)
If I'm any judge of art, this painting should be worth a pretty penny.
And now it's time for us to part as well. Bye!
