AWAKE / WAKE UP 目が覚めて/目を覚ます、起こす
- To be awake is to not be sleeping.
To wake up is to stop sleeping; for example, you wake up when the alarm clock rings.
To wake up someone is to make them stop sleeping. - be awake は、眠っていない状態、つまり、起きている状態のことです。
wake up は、眠るのをやめる、という意味です。例えば、目覚し時計が鳴って目が覚める、というときなどに使います。
wake up someone は、人が眠るのをやめさせる、つまり、人を起こす、という意味です。
- (to her husband lying in bed with the lights off)
WOMAN: Honey? Are you still awake?
MAN: Yes. I'm having trouble falling asleep. - The storm kept me awake last night.
- I'd better go to bed. I have to wake up early tomorrow.
- (on the phone)
a: Could I speak to your mother please?
b: She's still asleep, but if it's important, I'll wake her up for you. - (at a hotel front desk)
GUEST: I'd like a wake-up call, please.
CLERK: Certainly. What time would you like us to wake you up tomorrow?
