Explanation

  • To check out a book, CD, etc. from a library is to borrow it.
  • check out a book、CD などというと、本やCDなどを図書館から借り出す、という意味になります。

examples

  1. CHILD: I'd like to check out this book.
    LIBRARIAN: Alright. Can I see your library card, please?
  2. (a librarian to someone with seven books)
    I'm sorry, but you can only check out five books at a time.
  3. WOMAN: I'm looking for the book “Middlemarch” by George Eliot.
    LIBRARIAN: (checking the online catalog) I'm sorry, but that book has been checked out to someone else. Would you like to reserve it?
