HUMID vs. MUGGY   湿気の多い vs. 蒸し暑い

Explanation

  • When talking about weather, we say that it is humid when the air is wet.

    When it is so wet AND hot that it is uncomfortable, we often use the word muggy instead.
  • 気候の話をするとき、湿気が多い場合は、humid という言葉を使います。

    不快なほど湿気が多くて暑い(つまり、蒸し暑い)ときは、muggy という言葉をよく使います。

examples

  1. Kyoto is hot and humid in the summer.
  2. Fog forms when humid air is cooled.
  3. Don't hang the laundry up in the bathroom; it's too humid in there. It'll never get dry.
  4. I'm staying inside today; it's too muggy to go out.
  5. (radio weather report)
    It'll be another muggy day in Yokohama, with humidity at about 95% and temperatures in the upper 30s.
