A major reason for Kyoto and Nara's fame is the beauty and antiquity of places such as Kiyomizudera, Horyuji, and Fushimi Inari Taisha. These names are legendary throughout the world. So in any discussion of these two great cities, you'll need to understand the difference between this pair of words!

Explanation

  • Temples and shrines are buildings where religious ceremonies are held and where people go to show their respect for a god or gods and to ask for their help.

    When talking about Japan, buildings used for Buddhist ceremonies are usually called temples, and those used for Shinto ceremonies are called shrines.
  • templeshrine は、宗教的な儀式が行われたり、人々が参拝して神仏に敬意を払ったり、願い事をしたりするために行く場所です。

    日本について言えば、通常 temple は仏教の寺のことを、shrine は神道の神社のことをさします。
