ADOPT    養子にする

Explanation

  • When a man and woman become the legal parents of someone else's child we say they adopt the child.

    If your parents adopt a boy, then that boy is your adopted brother. If they adopt a girl, she is your adopted sister.
  • adopt  は、夫婦が他人の子供の法律上の親になる、つまり、子供を養子にする、という意味です。

    両親が男の子を養子にした場合、あなたから見てその子は adopted brother  になります。女の子の場合は、adopted sister  といいます。

  1. If we can't have children of our own, then we'll just have to adopt a child.
  2. We adopted Danny when he was three years old. He lost his parents in a traffic accident.
  3. (introducing your sister to a friend)
    I want you to meet my adopted sister, Sophat. She's from Cambodia.
