Here's another "family" word you'll want to know, but probably didn't learn in school!

HALF-(BROTHER)   片親が違う(兄弟)

Explanation

  • Your half-brother or half-sister has the same father or mother as you, but the other parent is different.
  • half-brother  または half-sister  は、片親が違う(血のつながりが片親のみ)兄弟、姉妹のことです。

examples

  1. a: Is Mark really your brother? He doesn't look like you at all.
    b: Well, he's my half-brother. We have the same dad, but different mothers.
  2. a: Alice can't be Robert's sister. They don't even have the same last name!
    b: She's his half-sister. She was born after his mother remarried.
  3. (Keiko, Yuri, and Masaki are all in high school) 
    Keiko: Is Masaki your half-brother?
    Yuri: No, he's my stepbrother. His dad married my mom last year.
