Explanation

  • If something starts to burn, we say it catches fire.
  • 何かが燃え出すこと、つまり何かに火がつくことを catch fire といいます。

examples

  1. Try to keep burnable objects away from the stove so they don't catch fire.
  2. Although clothes with a "flame resistant" label are not fireproof, they won't catch fire as easily as ordinary clothes.
  3. This wood won't catch fire. I shouldn't have left it out in the rain.
  4. There was an explosion on the giant oil tanker, causing it to catch fire and burn out of control for days.
